  • Mantras

    Develop a mantra!

Does a particular word, phrase or quote help you calm down and relax? Why not make it your mantra? Write it, think it, speak it, repeat it any time you feel stressed, impatient or anxious. Just please avoid yelling "Serenity Now!" out loud like Seinfeld's Frank Costanza! In case you're out of mantras, here's some that we like:

    • There's nothing to worry about
    • Tomorrow, I'll be through it
    • I can do this. I'm doing it now
    • It's OK to make mistakes
    • I am only afraid because I decided to be. I can decide not to be
    • I did it!
    • I am able to relax away anxiety
    • I can't predict the future

  • Body Awareness

    Just let go!

Lie down, get comforable and close your eyes. Become aware of your breathing. Feel the air move in through your nose and out through your mouth. Again. Just focus on your body. Which parts of your body do you feel easily? Which parts have little sensation? Is there a difference between your right and left side? Are you aware of any discomfort in your body? Can you describe this discomfort in detail? Focus, and see what happens to this discomfort. Imagine a bright warm light shining on it, soothing it in the process. Continue letting go like this for another 5 minutes. Breathe!

  • Breath Counting Meditation

The Count may have been onto something!

This form of medidation can be done while sitting upright or lying down. Either way, find your posture and center yourself. Take several deep breaths - in through the nose, out through the mouth. Close your eyes. Take deep, but not forced belly breaths. Now, as you exhale, say "one". Continue counting with each exhale: "two"... "three"... "four". Then begin again with "one". If you lose count, simply start over. If you discover that your mind has slipped into thought, note this, and then gently return to the counting of your breath.

  • Coffee Meditation

Is there really such a thing?

We think so! That first cup of coffee (or tea or juice) is your way of breaking your nightly fast. But when was the last time you actually paid any attention while you took that first sip? The next time you've got your Venti Decaf Soy No Foam Latté (my favourite) in hand, try this little exercise. First, sit down. Take several deep breaths. Bring your nose close to the cup and inhale its aroma. Yummy right? What do you smell? The coffee? The cinnamon you sprinkled on it? Bet you can hardly restrain yourself from gobbling it up! Be aware of your intention to begin drinking it. Move your hand over the cup. Feel its warmth. Is your mouth watering yet? As you take your first sip, feel the hot sensation in your mouth, on your tongue, in your esophagus. Can you feel the warmth in your stomach? As you continue to sip your beverage, try to stay aware of as many sensations as you can. Try holding the cup with the hand that you don't normally use - the awkwardness may help you pay more attention and stay present. Most of all though, appreciate that cup of joe!

  • Gratitude

This is a great exercise to help you take stock of your life's simple pleasures.

Reflect back over your day and select three things that you feel grateful for. You don't have to go looking for major events. For example, you may be grateful for that warm shower you took this morning. Or maybe for the unconditional love your dog showed you this morning when he greeted you so enthusiastically when you woke up. What about that smile from the stranger in the elevator? Take a moment to relive and enjoy these precious experiences. And when you're done, say out loud" "I am grateful".
